What is coaching? It may be appropriate to define what coaching is NOT. It is not training. Training is a structured group process designed to provide people with the skills and knowledge required to perform specific tasks or give them specific capabilities. It is not counselling. Counselling is primarily about achieving change in someone's attitude to problems. So what is coaching? Coaching is career focused. It is concerned with enhancing a person's performance at work through changes in behaviour. It is an enabling process in which more effective use is made of existing knowledge and abilities. And mentoring? Mentoring can be defined as "the practice of assigning a junior member of staff to the care of a more experienced person who assists him [or her] in his [or her] career".
